School History

Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center (SHMSTC) boasts a rich and lengthy history, starting as Houston Academy in 1878. 

Here's a brief look at its history:
1878-1881: Founded as Houston Academy.
1881-1886: Renamed Clopper Institute.
1886-1895: Became Houston Normal School.
1895-1926: Renamed Houston High School.
1926-1955: Became Central High School.
1955-2008: Renamed Sam Houston High School.
2008-present: Named Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center. 

Important points to note:
Oldest Public High School: SHMSTC is the oldest public high school within the Houston Independent School District and in the state of Texas.
Notable Teacher: Lyndon B. Johnson, a former President of the United States, taught English and Speech at the school during the Sam Houston High School era.
